It’s a clique and I think a clique exists in every business. There’s a circle of people that are guaranteed to open a movie and we all know their names and whether they’re right or wrong for the role. ~ Elizabeth Pena ~ [Source]
Wikipedia states that:
A clique is an exclusive group of people who share interests, views, purposes, patterns of behavior, or ethnicity. A clique is a subset of individuals from a larger group, who are more closely identified with one another than the remaining members of the group, and who exchange something among themselves, such as friendship, affection, or information.
At any point in time, we will be faced with being in a group where we share something in common with a few people. That’s the ‘click’ we get. Outings and dinners are often organised just to talk about something that is commonly understood. As a parent, you will play a role in your daughter’s clique, for example.
There are ways to dissolve cliques. This happens when leadership is shared. Cliques is seen in the negative light due to the difference between community and clique. No matter how hard one works at dissolving cliques, it isn’t easy. It’s human behaviour. It is much more comfortable with participating with a familiar group of people to hang out with than to gel with others whom you have just gotten a name because someone in the group happens to be friends with them.
One would hesitate to join in another group even if that group has an interest that you have in common because you are not familiar with them.
Have you tried joining a different group for cycling, trekking, rock climbing or bowling?
