I take rejection as someone blowing a bugle in my ear to wake me up and get going, rather than retreat. ~ Sylvester Stallone – [Source]
Since the day we are born, we have been hearing, “No!”, “Don’t do that!”, “Stop asking why!” until we automatically accept rejections as a way to stop ourselves from progressing further unlike what Thomas Edison, J. K. Rowling, Bill Gates, Sylvester Stallone have succeeded in their respective fields.
Most of us will tell ourselves, “Look, stupid! See! It was going to be a ‘No’, why did I bother to ask?” or “I knew it would be a flat ‘No’. So why did I waste my time?” Was that what happened when your request for a raise was rejected despite you having talked to your boss politely?
Did you tell your boss about your achievements throughout the year to support your raise request? Did you find out why it was rejected and how you could get a better response the next time you ask? Or just hope that the annual appraisal will look good enough for you to get a raise without you doing all the self-promotion?
We are so tuned in to the rejections that we often overlook the prospects of looking at the rejections from another point of view. It’s just another way to improve ourselves. We might not be great speakers but we can always improve with practice.
Wallowing in self-pity feels awful, doesn’t it? Wouldn’t you want to get it out of your system fast? Don’t you want to be successful too?
