Is There a Right Time for Career Change?

Did you always wanted to change your career because you feel that you are in the ruts? Unable to get up in the mornings because you dread the feeling of going to the office? You are not alone. Changing careers can be scary but you can conquer the fear.

Is there a right time for a change? No one can know for sure. During your 2nd year of studies, you suddenly find yourself being told to leave the company, for good. You haven’t updated your resume and starts to panic. How are you going to pay for the school fees that are due in 3 months’ time?

First, you calm down. if you have been given a month’s notice, take that 1st week to reflect your priorities in life. Besides the fees, are there any payments you need to clear? Do you want to stick to this current job scope whereby you have been doing so for 3 years?

By listing down your finances, you get a clearer picture of what is going on in your life for the short term. Do you need more time to study? If so, perhaps a part time job is able to cover your daily needs while your bank account does hold enough to cover for the final year’s fees.

In other cases, do you want to change from finance line to being an IT personnel? Which area of IT are you keen in? Is your change of career at a critical period when home loans, kids’ education and other things are just coming up?

Have you reached that low point in your current career? Do you find your current job not fulfilling? With no job being lined up, do you have other options to support you without being too heavily financially burdened?

There are steps to list down how you can move into that new career. It is an overwhelming decision when your family doesn’t support your decision. In this case, find a mentor. A mentor can be someone whom you have worked with before. It does help if the mentor is influential. That’s when networking comes in handy.

Any change in life brings in insecurity. Don’t worry, the feeling is normal. Career change takes time. Just ask anyone who has done it. A friend of mine took about a year to switch to Human Resources(HR). Life is fragile, so, live it to the fullest by not regretting not making that change.
