Airs of importance are the credentials of impotence. ~ Johann Kaspar Lavater ~ [Source]

Every now and then, we have this need to feel important. Even when someone ask us for a simple advice on changing a job. When a trip to the doctor for a routine checkup makes one feel important, it does boosts one’s self-esteem a lot. At other times, when a colleague posts the following poem for all to see, one will feel dispensable.
Sometime when you’re feeling important;
Sometime when your ego ‘s in bloom;
Sometime when you take it for granted,
You’re the best qualified in the room:
Sometime when you feel that your going,
Would leave an unfillable hole,
Just follow these simple instructions,
And see how they humble your soul.
Take a bucket and fill it with water,
Put your hand in it up to the wrist,
Pull it out and the hole that’s remaining,
Is a measure of how much you’ll be missed.
You can splash all you wish when you enter,
You may stir up the water galore,
But stop, and you’ll find that in no time,
It looks quite the same as before.
The moral of this quaint example,
Is to do just the best that you can,
Be proud of yourself but remember,
There’s no indispensable man.
Despite life’s challenges, we have this need to feel important to prove our worth in life. As childrent, we may be proud to show off that new wound from a bicycle fall. It’s like a badge of honour so that others will look up at us in awe. At work, we have this need to be praised for doing something that we feel we have done incredibly well in front of others.
Feeling important is a common human nature. How important is feeling important to you?
