Take Damage Control for Work Depression
May 15, 2008 |
Depressed at work? You are not alone. Studies have shown that at some point in life, 1 in 5 women and 1 in 10 men will have depression at work. What are the symptoms involved? Some of them include:
- Working slowly
- Making mistakes more often
- Unable to concentrate
- Forgetful

This affects a person’s ability to be effective. Some have been known to stop working for some time to prevent further damage. When you start to feel trapped in your work, helplessness sets in. You can’t seem to get started on your daily tasks and simply feel like leaving right there and then.
At this stage, what can you do to help yourself? Start by talking to a mentor or someone whom you trust. Your employer or peer worker may want to help you. At this moment, you need some help. Don’t deny yourself that help.
Perhaps, a job change may be in order. It could be a right time for a career change or you just need to take a holiday. Talk to your family about a job change if you feel that there is a need. Update them about your life.
A holiday could be the thing that you need for self-reflection. Sometimes, change is scary and you are afraid of it. Ask around those who have had various job positions. Or ask someone who switched career paths after 5 years in accounting to human resources.
Work depression makes you ineffective and worst, unproductive. Take damage control by helping yourself. Take the 1st step to help yourself so that others can help you.
Do you have other ways to help yourself? Or how did you help someone who was depressed at work?
