Your Expectations and Others

September 5, 2008 |

‘Blessed is the man who expects nothing, for he shall never be disappointed’ was the ninth beatitude. ~ Alexander Pope ~ [Source]

In life, there are expectations; from teachers, parents to employers. Even your life partners. Teachers expect you to do well in class while employers want results, punctuality and more from you. Life partners expect you to support, advise, love and even making decisions for them. Sometimes, they blame you when the decision you made based on what was given, went wrong.

You have your own set of expectations too. You expect something to do well in business but it went horribly wrong. You expect to get A star for a particular exam but you got a B. You expected your partner to understand what your rationale behind asking the questions leading to an expensive purchase but you got blamed for not being supportive.

Jason from A Miracle a Day talks about our expectations vs others. Below is a quote that is quite useful to manage your behaviour.

The more aware you are of the process of other people’s expectations being absorbed and becoming your expectations, the less it happens. Choosing to adopt the expectations of others, consciously, is not really “absorbing” them. It’s simply looking at them, deciding they are what you want, and implementing them yourself. It’s like the difference between decorating your house a certain way because “everybody’s doing it”, and doing it because it’s the way you actually like it, whether or not anybody else does.

Disappointments come with great expectations. Sometimes, it is better not to expect anything. Have you had expectations that disappointed you? How did you deal with it?
